Charged with Caution: Lithium-Ion Battery Safety in Condominiums

Lithium-ion batteries are now a routine part of condominium living, powering everything from phones, laptops, tools, vapes, e-bikes, and e-scooters to other personal mobility devices. When used, stored, and charged properly, these batteries are generally safe. However, damaged batteries, uncertified products, improper charging, unsafe storage, and improper disposal can create serious fire and life safety risks in multi-residential buildings.

Join CCI Eastern Ontario for a practical discussion on lithium-ion battery safety in condominium communities. Jason Reid of National Life Safety Group will explain the emerging fire and life safety concerns associated with lithium-ion batteries, including how risks can arise, what warning signs residents and staff should recognize, and why safe charging, storage, and disposal practices matter in buildings.

Natasha Smith of Eastern Ontario Property Management Group will then address the practical side of implementation for condominium corporations, including how boards and managers can communicate with owners, train staff, consider policy options, budget for reasonable safety measures, and incorporate recommendations into day-to-day building operations.

This session will help boards, managers, and condominium professionals move from general awareness to practical risk reduction.

Jason Reid

I’ve been fortunate to spend over 25 years working in Fire, Health & Safety, and Emergency Management. During this time, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with building owners, managers, and facility teams across Canada and abroad—helping to strengthen safety, compliance, and resilience in a wide variety of settings, from high-rises and mass venues to complex, high-risk facilities. As part of the team at National Life Safety Group, my focus is on practical, collaborative solutions that protect people, property, and reputations. I’m grateful to have learned alongside so many dedicated professionals, and to contribute in small ways to advancing best practices in our field. Im an active volunteer to many industry associations. Along the way, I’ve been honoured to receive recognition such as the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Award and the Ontario Volunteer Service Award. But more than anything, I’m thankful for the chance to do meaningful work with passionate colleagues, family, and friends who inspire me every day.
